Our Spring Concert – The warm weather is coming!

Dear supporters of the Rand Symphony Orchestra,

Thank you for your support this year. While it is still cold outside, we are hard at work preparing for our Spring Picnic Concert, which promises to be a relaxing day out with the whole family!

Join us on Sunday 7th September 15h00 on the Domus Dei Church Lawns, 30 Jean road, Blairgowrie, for an afternoon of music.

Tickets are on sale at Quicket from R 120 – R 180 and kids under 12 are free.

Bring your picnic blankets, snacks, and the whole family to enjoy a live performance. From classical favourites to popular tunes, the concert offers something for everyone. It’s a casual, family-friendly event that celebrates music, community, and nature.

The perfect opportunity to introduce your kids or grandkids, nieces and nephews to symphonic music.

As a non-profit, we rely on our supporters to spread the word about our events. To boost our ticket sales, please do share this information on your school and community WhatsApp groups, forward it to friends and family, or print it out and put it on your workplace fridge. It all helps!

Rousing Romantics Concert

Our first concert of this year will be on the 16th of March, under the baton of our resident conductor and musical director, Carel Henn. Our programme of “rousing romantics” promises to be an afternoon well-spent, listening to spirited music, filled with passion.

Fantasy finale

Our final concert for 2024 takes place this Sunday, 27 October at the Linder Auditorium at 15h30.  The concert will feature the Jeppe High School for Girls choir, orchestra and music staff, the Rand Symphony Orchestra, the Drakensberg Old Boys Choir, the Potchefstroomse Mannekoor and four incredible soloists; Dominique Deysel, Linelle Wimbles, Theunis Botha and the incomparable Timothy Moloi.

The audience can look forward to a selection operatic arias, popular light classical music and musicals showcasing the talents of our professional singers, choirs and orchestra.

Our resident conductor, Carel Henn will direct the orchestra and mass choir in Beethoven’s Choral Fantasy, which is part piano concerto and part choral spectacular.  Dr Elize Kruger, Head of Music at the school is the featured soloist.  Guest conductor Andrew Pallet, music teacher at Jeppe, will conduct the choir and orchestra in a number of items.

Spring Picnic 2024

The first signs of Spring have arrived. Birds are singing just before sunrise, the early morning chill is starting to subside and the afternoons are warming pleasantly. September is around the corner and we invite you to join us at the Domus Dei church lawns in Blairgowrie for an afternoon of music with your friends, family and the Rand Symphony Orchestra.

Our featured soloist, Braam Van Tonder will showcase the trumpet as solo instrument with his performance of the Concerto for Trumpet and Orchestra by Oskar Böhme. Braam is a driven trumpeter specialising in performance, conducting and teaching in Pretoria, Johannesburg and as far afield as Grey College in Bloemfontein.

The orchestra, under the baton of Carel Henn, will entertain with a programme of polkas, waltzes and music from stage and screen that promises to pair exceedingly well with a plate of savoury snacks and glass (or 2) of wine.

We invite you to bring a picnic basket, cooler box, blanket and/or chairs and spend the afternoon with beautiful music in a family-friendly setting. Book on Quicket (Click here).

Rising Stars Youth Concert

The Rand Symphony Orchestra conducted by Carel Henn proudly presents its annual youth concert, “Rising Stars.” The concert takes place on Sunday 9 June at The Roodepoort Theatre and promises to be an unforgettable afternoon of musical brilliance.

The concert will feature a dynamic repertoire which includes composers from the Baroque era through to Late Romantic, with the likes of Vivaldi, Handel, Mozart, Bruch and Tchaikovsky. The soloists will be playing various instruments from violin, to flute, clarinet, piano and voice. The age of the soloists range from 8 – 19 years old.

“Rising Stars” shines a spotlight on the exceptional abilities of budding musicians from our community and celebrates the incredible talent and dedication of young musicians. We are honored to provide a platform for them to share their passion with our audience.

Mozart and more!

And so we have reached 2024!  May our loyal supporters have a successful and healthy year ahead.

The orchestra is about to resume rehearsals this coming week. Our next concert will be at the Roodepoort Theatre, on 17 March 2024.

Titled “Mozart and More“, this concert features Camelia Onea (pictured) performing the Mozart Violin Concerto no. 5.  Camelia is a graduate of the George Enesco Academy in Bucharest, and is currently Concert Master of the Johannesburg Festival Orchestra. She is one of the top violinists in South Africa, and appears regularly as soloist, chamber musician and recording artist.

The programme also includes the Rosamunde Overture by Schubert and Symphony no. 8 by Antonín Dvořák. 

As usual, the orchestra will be under the baton of our resident conductor and Musical Director, Carel Henn.

Christmas Concert with Linelle Wimbles and Wolfgang Visser

The year is fast coming to a close, and what better way to finish a spectacular year of music than with our first ever Christmas Concert.

We invite you to join the orchestra in festive spirit with a  varied programme of Christmas themed music from the baroque to classical, as well as traditional and contemporary Christmas songs and carols with a symphonic twist.  The featured guest soloists are soprano Linelle Wimbles and violinist Wolfgang Visser who will bring an extra touch of brilliance to the  concert.

This heart-warming Christmas concert promises an evening of musical brilliance and festive spirit that will leave you with cherished memories.

Bring your family and friends, and celebrate the most wonderful time of the year together with us.

Choral spectacular not to be missed!

The Rand Symphony Orchestra and Jeppe High School for Girls present Sir Karl Jenkins’ fabulous ‘Stabat Mater’ in a choral spectacular that is not to be missed!

On Sunday 29 October 2023, at 15:30 at the Linder Auditorium, the Rand Symphony Orchestra will join the Drakensberg Old Boys’ Choir and Voces Libres Chamber Choir in support of the Jeppe High School for Girls’ Choir, Orchestra and Music Staff.  Carel Henn, the conductor of the Rand Symphony Orchestra takes the reins in this mass orchestra and choir production and Megan Napier as the vocal soloist.

Stabat Mater is a 2008 composition for choir and orchestra by Karl Jenkins, based on the 13th-century prayer Stabat Mater. Like much of Jenkins’ earlier work, the work incorporates both traditional Western music (orchestra and choir) with ethnic instruments and vocals, this time focusing on the Middle East.

The concert will open with Elgar’s well-loved Nimrod from the Enigma Variations conducted by guest conductor Andrew Pallet from Jeppe Girls’ High School.

Call for applications – Youth Concert 2024

The Rand Symphony Orchestra’s annual Youth Concert takes place on 9 June 2024 at the Roodepoort Theatre and applications are now open.

Known in recent years as the “Rising Stars” Youth Concert, this event provides an opportunity for young musicians, under the age of 21 to perform under the expert guidance of conductor Carel Henn.

Auditions for the Youth Concert will take place on 4 March 2024 in Blairgowrie.
