November Gala Concert
The Rand Symphony Orchestra, with the support of The Rupert Music Foundation and under the baton of Carel Henn, will present our Gala Concert for this year at the Linder Auditorium. We are delighted to be performing again at this wonderful venue.
The programme will consist of Beethoven’s Egmont Overture, The Variations (on a Theme by Paganini) by Rachmaninov, with soloist Landi Schaap, and Elgar’s Enigma Variations – a beautiful programme for which we are currently rehearsing. We know you will enjoy it as much as we do!

Looking ahead
As we head briskly towards the year-end we look forward to the Rand Symphony Orchestra’s Gala Concert in November which will once again take place at the Linder Auditorium.
Our soloist for this concert is the accomplished Landi Schaap who will perform the Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini by Rachmaninoff.
The Musical Director and Conductor of the Rand Symphony Orchestra, Carel Henn, selected Beethoven’s Overture to Egmont and Elgar’s Enigma Variations to round out the programme.
Our loyal supporters in Sasolburg will have the opportunity to enjoy the Gala Concert one week prior to the Linder concert.

After a brief break in rehearsals for the July holidays and the AGM, we are hard at work with rehearsals for the September Picnic Concert which will take place on the lawns of our “home base”, Domus Dei Randburg-Suid on 4 September. Youth Concert 2022 Highlights
The 2022 edition of the Rand Symphony Orchestra’s “Rising Stars” Youth Concert featured 11 soloists, playing works from 11 composers from the baroque to 20th century, on 5 different instruments in the strings, brass and wood-wind families, not forgetting the piano (the wood-string family? – ed).
This year’s participants included:
Emily and Lilian Geekie, who are sisters, book-fanatics and coffee aficionados;
Jayden Li, a martial artist, outdoor enthusiast and chinchilla-owner;
Mbali Phato, who enjoys serving her community and plans to pursue a career in music;
Talita Smith, who also sings and plans to study music performance and music therapy;
Chi-Chi Juan, who has performed in Carnegie Hall and is active in the Johannesburg Junior Council;
Sara Stoffberg; who loves animals and is currently learning Arabic;
Kehan Taljaard, who is also an accomplished saxophonist and enjoys Dixie and Big Band music;
Marilize Diedericks, who started her own chamber orchestra and also plays the french horn;
Simon Holm, who plays in a trombone quartet and Dixie band;
Annie Chang, who is an internationally accomplished musician and plans to study law.
While the Youth Concert programme is always just as diverse as its young soloists, the movement from Xian Xinghai’s “Yellow River Concerto” performed by Annie Chang certainly broadened the orchestra’s horizons. In another refreshing change of scenery for the orchestra, the well-known violin show-piece “Czardas” by Monti was brilliantly interpreted on the alto saxophone by Talita Smith.
This year the concert took place in the hall of the St Bonifatius German Catholic Church in Sundowner which graciously accommodated the orchestra’s requirements in terms of date and rehearsal schedule. The concert would however not have been possible at this venue without the generous sponsorship of WS Pianos who provided the piano used by the soloists.
The Rand Symphony’s Youth Concert is a non-competitive showcase of the young talent in Randburg and surrounding areas, drawing interest from as far as afield as Soweto and Pretoria. Each participant received a Certificate of Achievement at the end of the concert.
The Rand Symphony’s Youth Concert is an annual event and auditions take place in January or February each year. The selected participants then meet the orchestra in April and May for a mere 3 rehearsals each before the final dress rehearsal and concert.

Autumn Concert
We invite you to join us for our Autumn concert featuring violinist Jonathan Mayer who will perform Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto.
Our Wonderful conductor, Carel Henn, will once again hold the baton, and the members of the Rand Symphony Orchestra whilst playing for ‘The Love of Music’, will also be playing in the hopes of peace throughout the world.

About the soloist
Jonathan (27) has a Licentiate in Music Performance for Violin from ABRSM (2017). He started playing the violin in 2003, and plays on a Galea violin.
He began violin lessons in Durban with Atina Petrova, and in 2009, after moving to Johannesburg, started lessons with Irene Tsoniff. In 2015 Jonathan studied under Prof. Farida Bacharova at the University of Cape Town, and in 2016 returned to Johannesburg to continue his studies with Irene Tsoniff.
Jonathan attended the New Virtuosi International Violin Masterclass course in Italy 2014, studying under Russian violinist Professor Felix Andrievsky of the Royal College of Music; and England 2017, studying under violinists Professor Ani Schnarch of the Royal College of Music, and Yin Ke of Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, Singapore.
The recipient of numerous awards and prizes including the runner-up to the finals of the UNISA national strings competition (2021), and finalist in the ATKV-Musiq (2017) and Artscape (2013).
He has performed throughout South Africa as a soloist including theKZNPO’s Young Performers 2009, the JPO’s Youth Concerto Festival 2010 and 2011, the South African Tattoo 2012 and 2013; the KZNPO National Youth Concerto Festival 2014; the South African National Youth Orchestra Britten Double Concerto for Violin and Viola 2016, and Kutlwano Masote’s Mediterranean Classics at Nirox 2017.
He has been concert master of several orchestras including the KZN Youth Orchestra guest appearance at the Stellenbosch Chamber Music Festival 2009, and for the same Festival’s ‘Concert Orchestra 2009’; the Johannesburg Youth Orchestra 2010 to 2014, and concert master for the South African National Youth Orchestra at the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown 2013.
Jonathan currently plays for the JPO as well as The JPO String Quartet. He regularly performs with numerous ensembles, orchestras and groups, across various musical genres, and contracts as a session musician.
Note on the programme.
This programme was decided on and put together last year, pre-dating the current conflict in Eastern Europe by more than six months. The Rand Symphony Orchestra is a Non-Profit Company, now registered as a PBO, who play together “For the Love of Music”. We have no political agenda. We cannot, at this proximity to the performance, move away from the exquisite works that were chosen then. These works in no way reflect any political ideals, but are exquisite music, which we know will bring peace of mind to those who listen to it.

The Rand Symphony Orchestra has hosted an annual Youth Concert for many years. These concerts have become an annual community highlight and is supported and appreciated by a diverse audience.
Although the 2021 concert had to be cancelled due to the pandemic, we were able to feature some of the young soloists in our Picnic Concert at the end of 2021. We are happy to announce that arrangements are going ahead for 2022 with auditions taking place on 5 March 2022 at 09h00.
These concerts provide the opportunity for young students to play solo works accompanied by the Orchestra, thereby enabling them to reach a higher level of performance, perform in front of a wider audience and stimulate their musical development.
We encourage young musicians between under the age of 21 to audition and take part in this opportunity.

Under the baton of Carel Henn, the orchestra will open the concert with the Wedding March by Mendelsohn.
This will be followed by the Guilmant Organ Symphony No. 1 with soloist Marnus Greyling.
The performance ends with the triumphant “Eroica” Symphony (No. 3) by Beethoven.

About the soloist
Marnus Greyling frequently performs with the Symphony Choir of Johannesburg, Johannesburg Festival Orchestra, Gauteng Philharmonic, Apple Green Orchestra, Johannesburg Bach Choir, Chanticleer Singers and Buskaid Soweto String Ensemble. Highlights include a performance in St Albans Cathedral, England, of Brahms’ Ein Deutsches Requiem with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, as well as a live BBC Radio Broadcast to over 3 million people in the UK.

Picnic Variety Concert
Bring your picnic basket and blanket and join us for a variety performance, outdoors on the lush green lawn of Domus Dei Randburg-Suid.
Under the baton of Carel Henn, the full orchestra will perform concertos by Mozart, Mendelssohn and Vivaldi with soloists Annie Chang, Daniel Spies and Marilize Diedericks.
The orchestra will also perform a variety of works by Beethoven, Elgar, Brahms, Strauss and Dvorak.
Chairs will be available if seating is required.
